Recently Scotland's fattest man died, he weighed a whopping 38 stone! and blamed his obesity on agrophobia..his wife apparently agreed with this..but hang on! surely the lazy sod could have bought himself an exercise bike,to help to reduce the effect of all that calorific crap, he must of been regularly munching...I just cannot condone that kind of high class lazy ignorance, ok agrophobia is a serious condition but so is allowing yourself to reach a gargantuan 38 stone! ...good riddence mate neither heaven nor hell can afford to satisfy your appetite
Like most ignorant people, you Goblin do not surprise me with your attitude. Obesity, if you would care to do some research is not the result of lazyness as much as blindness could be the result of masturbation! It is very common for today's society to view obese people as lazy, with no self-esteem, bad and stupid, too! Obesety is today the stigma of a society that feels it is easy to blame the person for his or her condition instead of informing the public of the complex genetic, psychosocial, and medical reasons that ca cause it. Blaming someone who is obese for their obesity is very easy. See, one can say, they eat. So, it must be their own fault for being so fat! But hey, everyone eats, so how come everyone is not obese? Well, maybe because some people have different metabolisms, diffeent ways their body digests, stores and converts calories and that is based on the genetic structure of their body. There are people who have theroid deficiencies, who due to medication based on steroids gain weight even if they eat less than a normal person does, and so on. Pointing the finger and making fun of someone who is obese is very easy, indeed. What is NOT easy, is educating ones self of the reasons that cause obesity, the medical and genetic reasons. About the exercise bike, yes it does sound like a simple solution. What you failed to acknowledge though is that when a person reaches a certain weight, he or she has difficulty exercising because of joint and ligament problems. Maybe this guy like many obese people wanted to exercise but could not. Since you don't know all the details of this man's medical history, I feel it is discriminatory to accuse him as lazy and blaming him for his condition. Especially, since you claim to be so sensitive to discrimination when it comes to issues like the Holocaust. I am sorry to say, but you are a hypocrite! Star
Goblin, eehm well, at lest he didn't go out and kill half of his class mates and, well, he is free to do whatever he wants with his body is he not? If he paid for his food, well, he can eat as much of it as he would care to and there's nothing any of us can say about it. Of course we could deny him certain treatment on a self inclifted desease due to eating if it somehow can be proven that he could've turned out otherwise but it's very hard, it's not like alcoholism that has a structure around it. I think obeasity should be treated in similar ways and I think the awareness level is rising but more needs to be done.
People make up reasons or excuses for everything, blindness is used to getting other to do things for you (I'm saying many blind people do that on occasion, I'm sure I've found myself guilty of it at some pointsin time even if I really try not to), people who comit crime blame it on poverty or the way they were treated as children, alcoholics blame their addiction on family problems or lonelyness etc .. are these valid excuses, it's hard to say over all I'd say no but everyone uses excuses or makes them up to justify undesrieable behavior, why should obease people be singledout.
Cheers

Obesity is a self-made problem. Yes all people eat, but people choose what they eat. It is true that some people like different things and they can't entirely decide for themselves what they're going to like and what they will dislike. The body does that. Obese people need to be told how to lose their weight and if they refuse to do something about their problem after they've been sprovided with a solution which would work, they should be stripped of their right to healthcare unless they pay for it.
Well you can say that people who suffer from obesity should have their healthcare withdrawn, but where do you draw the line. do you for instance withdraw healthcare for people who do sports? after all, they know what they're doing, and they know the risks the sport they do carries, why should we have to pay for them to get injured. Also what about people who smoke fr instance, shouldn't we refuse them healthcare as well? after all they know that smoking kills them but they do it anyway. It's such a broad spectrum, that it's almost impossible to judge, after all, different people have different vews on what should, and should not, be treated.
Doesn't obesity have its own consequences without having to impose societal ones? If obesity is so wrong, what do you think of eating disorders or obsessive dieting?
well, excessive dieting has all too much to do with the image we are expected to live up to. the role models for our children (predominantly girls) are models who have the best figures, the beautiful people. And we grow up with this view that nothing but perfection is good enough. And it's also about other people's perceptions. When I was a teenager I was very skinny, not because of any eating disorder, but because I had an overactive thyroid which caused me to have an extremely high metabolism, a condition which was not diagnosed for several years, (not through anyone's incompetence but because the simptoms weren't there). When the condition was diagnosed, i had to take medication to bring it under control, and that medication caused me to gain weight, not excessively, but very quickly. I still was not overweight by any stretch of the imagination, but i was bigger than I once was. And someone said to me "it's such a shame, you had a lovely figure once". now if I had not been a strong person, I could easily have taken that to heart, and developed an eating disorder as a result of it. And that's what happens to so many. they want to be thin, they want to look like the models and have all the guys looking at them, but at what price. In my own situation I did not develop any such disorder of course - personally I love food too much to ever not eat, and as for eating and then throwing up - what a waste.
some ppl have illnesses/conditions in which they just can't help it unfortunately yeah!
Rd True but this guy just stayed indoors and ate.. greed like his, has always disgusted and appalled me, but in saying that I am also appalled by anorexia, having studied it in Uni...and recent studies have revealed a change in the brains of anorexia sufferers so they really cannot be held responsible for their disorder......the change shuts down the action of the brain which tells us to eat therefore they are able to by pass the terrible hunger pangs which would drive a normal person to distraction....
people like your man who recognise they have a problem and then exacerbate it are disgusting...
to say that someone got to that kind of weight purely because they were greedy is just a personal view - people eat that compulsively for a reason, the same as people shop compulsively, gamble, to a certain extent smoke and drink, although that is slightly different as alcohol and nicateen possess addictive qualities. Often the reason people eat compulsively is because they have no self esteem, and eating makes them feel good about themselves. We don't always understand how someone can get into that state, but it's psychological, the same as someone might suffer from a mental illness, and we ask for people t be tolerant of the mentally ill - well this is the same sort of thing. And after all, he wasn't hurting anyone, whereas people with mental illness go out hurting innocent people all the time ..
Sports stars get paid enough anyway so there's no reason as to why they can't afford to pay for their injuries to be treated. In the case of a person been overweight because of another condition they shouldn't be stripped of their healthcare, because that's not their fault.
Wangel, I'm not bashing you but it sure seems as if you've got a penalty or punishment ready for a lot of behaviors. If you weren't so much against religion, I bet the far right-wing fundamentalists would love this kind of attitude. You'd fit right in. LOL!
How ignorant... succeding reports of mentally ill people carrying out violent attacks invariably forget to mention the fact, that due to the tories scandalous care in the community, 1,000 's of seriously disturbed individuals are left to cope alone without support or adequate follow up..you have no idea how frightening that can be for someone suffering from Schizophrenia or PTSD..your attitude is ignorance personified...
he's back on form ...
So the "no excuses" attitude is ignorant whenit comes to people with mental problems but entirely justified and "all knowing" when it comes to people with weight problems?
So the "no excuses" attitude is ignorant whenit comes to people with mental problems but entirely justified and "all knowing" when it comes to people with weight problems?
well no, i think it is justified when goblin says it is justified, i.e. if goblin doesn't like it, then there are no excuses, if he's suffered from it, then it's excuseable... who's being ignorant ..
So the "no excuses" attitude is ignorant whenit comes to people with mental problems but entirely justified and "all knowing" when it comes to people with weight problems?
well well well aren't we a pair of two faced ignorant childish eejits hmm take a look at yourselvess if you want ignorance and wildebrew I thought personal attacks were ununcceptable and that is how you spell it I believe, your spelling is atrocious, I thought Iceland was ahead when it came to education ..hmm yours must have been sadly lacking..what were you doing in class crying because you couldn't see.
Goblin the only reason you arn't incredibly fat is because you post so much on this sight you don't have enough time to eat three regular meals a day.
No I'm close to 6ft and a very fit 12 stone. If I was your weight, I would not be climbing and lardbutt...this is comical indeed, from a numpty, who has admitted to getting people drunk so they can bear to be in his company.....
Hardly what I would call an intelligent move or a wise admission hmm? have those victims spoken to you since or have they threatened to hammer you if it happens again...
<grin> Spelling and typing happen to be two different things actually and, let me just point out that English is my third language, not my first nor my second, and the word eechet never featured in my education and I've never even seen it recognized as a proper English words. And you've never managed to show anyone on this site a credible proof of how I broke the "truce" and whenever I've asked you to show example you simply launch into the next pointless personal attack that really says more than anything I could point out. Sorry if I simply can't be bothered to keep perfect spelling, I'd rather have something to say and spell it badly than have nothing to do but express childish opinions and attack other people with "perfect" spelling. <grin> And you are the last person who can accuse others of two faced attitudes, your posts above underline yours as clearly as can be .. even within the same discussion ;) clearly losing it I see.

its still atrocious whatever paltry excuse you use to deny it and thew fact that you not bothered about losing your sight so early which man we have heard the sob stories so often depicting your screaming fits ect doesn't sound like acceptance to me,when you have something to say I might look forward to reading it, if that is at all possible...ohh here we go yet again he's digging up old worn out arguments, can't you at least be original ...your behaviour on here is credible proof...it's obvious to me if not to your idiotic, pathetic, lap dogs, who know no better
goblin you might want to look at that topic the basic zone rules and see how much support you got, and how much support the topic against you got... i think the topic speaks for itself.
oh and, do the civil service pay you well?
<grin> let us compare the number of times I talk about losing my sight to the number of times you mention your son and at lesat my story stays consistent whereas your son changes age every post.
And if I was sobbing over turning blind in class you probably didn't have time to pay attention to what your teacher said because you were either asking your class mates to please donate more blood for you to drink, complain about the lack of accessibility in Glasgo, play with yourself listening to interviews with Michael Formula one driver Shumacher, reporting your friend to the principal for being a stalker or dancing with 9 month old kids, not to mention trashing the class room in one of your famous tantrems, amazing reall you learnt anything now isn't it <grin>
And, yet again you resort to the slogans, knowing thee is nothing to back them up and, just for a start, let us see you write something in a language other than English (let us actually prefer two languages) and make it fairly complicated expression of thought, when you do this satisfactorily I will consider being even remotely ashamed of my typing, I shall be waiting patiently.
Now really goblin, you just got to do a lot better than this to convince me or anyone else that what you've been posting lately makes sense, it's pretty funny really. I am certainly more amused than anything else.
Cheers pal, cheers

ah but wildebrew, did you not know that glaswegian is effectively another language? i mean where in the english dictionary have you ever seen the word eedjit?
Please show me the post where I got people drunk so they could stand my company? There are actually a very few people on the zone who took the time to kind of get to know me, and realise there is more to me then what you people see on the boards and public quick notes, so yay for quick judgments based on little first hand knolidge of me, but I don't really give a shit what you think anyway so it's all good.
Anyways back to the original topic... I agree that being overweight can be caused by a slow metabolism as well as being a way to cope with emotional or other problems. In the case of the man with agoraphobia, if he couldn't or didn't want to get help for it, yes, he could've at least saved up to get some exercize equipment, and his wife could've been more supportive on that as well. I wouldn't go so far as to call him greedy though, as he probably wasn't thinking that as he was gaining weight. I think (if he already didn't have a problem with his metabolism but maybe even if he did), it's as much his wife's thing as it might have been his for not trying to get help for his problems. He should've tried to get help for his phobia, or at least tried to exercise more, and the wife could've been more encouraging towards that. That's too bad about him though anyway.
